What To Bring
Summer Camp is an exciting time, but packing the right items for any an every situation can be intimidating! Here's a list of items that your child will need at camp, as well as those that he or she won't need!
General Items
- An old suitcase, backpack, or duffle bag. Please don't send the belongings of two campers in the same suitcase!
- A completed Health Form
- Prescription medicines (in their original labeled container) as well at any OTC meds with instructions for use.
- A Bible, a notebook, and pencils/pens.
- At least one flashlight, and spare batteries. Please put your child's name on the flashlight. It will get lost at least once during the week!
- A sleeping bag or blanket and sheets.
- A pillow and a couple of pillow cases
- Toiletries, because your children won't smell good on Friday if you don't pack their soap and shampoo Saturday night!
- At least two towels
- A small backpack/bag for going to the bathhouse, swimming, and sleep outs.
- A water bottle that is easy to carry and refill. Please write the child's name on the bottle. It will also get lost at least once during the week!
- A bottle of sun screen, at least SPF 15
- A bottle of bug spray with tick protection. Please purchase the pump bottle and not the aerosol cans. The pump bottles cut down on the temptation to use bug spray on the campfires!
- Money for use at the camp store to be collected and secured at registration. (Optional)
- Money for mission campers to use when off camp. (Optional)
- A camera and a plastic sandwich bag to carry it in. (Optional)
- Envelopes and stamps. (Optional)
- Food for Loudoun Interfaith Relief, including cereal, juice, canned fruit or meat, macaroni and cheese, hearty soups, and "Chef Boyardee" products. (Optional)
Clothing
While at Camp Highroad, we want our campers to dress comfortably and to wear clothing appropriate for a Christian setting. We request that no undergarments be visible and that shorts be of a sufficient length to reach mid-thigh. Modest clothing has two benefits at Highroad: helping to not draw attention and protecting from thorns, thistles, and poison ivy! Please have this conversation with your child at home, and pack appropriate clothes for them. Thank you for help! All clothing sent to camp is subject to the mud and grass stains of an exciting camp experience. With that in mind, please send your camper with the following items.
- A bathing suit. One piece suits are preferred for girls, however, modest two piece suits are acceptable. Bikinis, if worn at camp, will be worn under an extremely stylish, dark, baggy t-shirt… Again, a one piece or modest two piece are acceptable!
- Long pants that do not sag below the waist.
- Long-sleeved shirt and/or sweatshirt.
- Tee shirts, no spaghetti straps or tube tops.
- Shorts, but not too short…
- A change of socks for each day.
- A change of underwear for each day.
- Either a light jacket or sweater. Several layers are better than one heavy jacket.
- Rain gear. A trash bag with a hole in it will work!
- Casual shoes or sneakers. No flip flops because they result in stubbed toes and cut feet on our rough trails.
- Shoes for water activities such as creek hikes and canoeing. The shoes should be appropriate for walking IN the water, old tennis shoes and water shoes both work great. Again, no flip flops… they just float away!
- Regular hiking boots if possible or extra sneakers in case others get wet. Your children will thank you for sending them with so many shoes!
- Plastic bag to bring home wet bathing suits or clothes. Our counselors will do their best to prevent wet clothes from going in the bag too early in the week… but prepare for a smelly laundry time on Sunday afternoon!
Additional Items for Wranglers Campers
Multiple pairs of long pants. Wrangler campers will have to wear long pants whenever they're on the horses, even in hot weather. This protects their legs from scrapes. They should also have shorts with them to change into when not riding.
Sturdy boots to wear while riding.
Items NOT To Bring
- Firearms (Obviously. This also includes airsoft, paintball, bows, slingshots, and anything else that could do bodily harm to other campers!)
- MP3 Players and iPods (Which are also mp3 players, even if they feel more like an appendage at this point)
- Cell Phones
- Radios, Tape and CD Players
- Computer Games… or Computers (Even the little ones!)
- Hair Dryers
- Knives
- Inappropriate Books (Romance Novels, Violent Graphic Novels etc.)
- Chewing Gum and Candy
- Cigarettes
- Matches and Lighters
- Mosquito Coil
- Cosmetics
- Food
- Laser Pointers
Any other items deemed inappropriate by staff will be confiscated and returned to parents. Campers and parents are asked not to bring animals to camp. A pet that is well-behaved at home can quickly become over-excited at camp.
