Programs
The prices below apply only to groups that have signed up on a "per activity" basis. Discounts are available for large groups and are built into our package deals. For any questions about specialty pricing for large groups, contact programs@camphighroad.org.
Camp Highroad offers a wide variety of programs to suit any group or need. These programs can take place as part of a package deal (see our Group Packages above!) or à la carte. Whether you're planning an overnight, multi-night, or day trip to Highroad, we're happy to help you select and schedule activities that fit your needs. All of Highroad's programs are listed below, along with brief descriptions and their 2011 prices. - New! High-Ropes Challenge Course – Coming Soon:
Starting in early 2012, Camp Highroad will begin the construction of its new High-Ropes Challenge Course! This course will include a three-sided rock-climbing tower, with three levels that launch into different challenges at 15', 35' and 50' . Initially, the course will include a Raider Bridge, Burma Bridge, Wobbly Log, and Pamper Pole, in addition to many high-ropes challenges. We also hope to add a Giant Swing, Flying Squirrel, and an enormous Zip Line in the near future. Stay posted for details!
- Archery:
Our archery instructors are trained to teach proper stance, technique, terms and, most importantly, how to get the arrow in the target safely! All equipment and instruction is included, so all you have to bring is… you! Archery is $7.00 per person per hour, with a ten person minimum.
- Campfires:
A camp classic! Roast marshmallows and S'mores, tell stories, or just enjoy staring into the embers! Fire rings and firewood are included in the price of almost all of our facilities and camping areas. If you are a day group looking for a campfire or picnic spot, contact the Registrar at registrar@camphighroad.org to discuss how Highroad can best meet your needs.
- Canoeing:
Come enjoy the Highroad pond, chase the geese, and watch the painted turtles swim beneath your canoe. Canoeing at Highroad falls into two categories: a canoe "session" or a canoe "class". A canoe session is $7.00 per person per hour, and includes a lifeguard, vest, paddle, canoe, a quick intro to canoeing, safety instruction, and assistance launching the crafts. A canoe lesson is $10.00 per person per hour. A canoe lesson includes everything that is included above, as well as paddling instruction both before and while in the water.. Depending on the age and experience level of the group, the instructor will provide demonstrations and instruction on safety, launching a canoe, paddle strokes, manuvering a canoe, and methods to right a flipped canoe. If your group requires that a lifeguard be present in addition to the instructor, who is a certified lifeguard, then an extra charge will be assessed to cover to cost of the additional staff. A minimum of 10 persons and a maximum of 24 people can be accommodated during a canoe program.
- Challenge Course:
Build communication, cooperation and trust through facing our challenge course elements as a team! Tell us beforehand what you want your team to focus on, and we'll brief our facilitators on your desired emphasis. Prices range from $13.00 per person, for a two hour course, to $25.00 for a four hour course with zip wire. Their is a ten person minimum for the challenge course. Children younger than 5th grade cannot participate in the zip wire.
- Creek Hikes:
Hiking in the creek with our lifeguards is a great way to cool off and to enjoy the nature at Camp Highroad! Our creek hikes run from late spring through late summer, and are for campers 5th grade and up. Life vests and a lifeguard are included; children will need to bring closed-toe water shoes to avoid stubbing their toes. The creek hike is $7.00 per person per hour, and there is a ten person minimum.
- Hayrides:
See the camp by day, or the stars by night, on one of our hypoallergenic "mattress" rides! Each hayride can hold up to 25 people and costs $62.50 per hour. Highroad has two hayrides, so up to 50 people at a time can enjoy a hayride.
- Hiking:
Hike our miles of trails and enjoy viewing the scenery and history of Highroad! There's no cost for this one, and we'll even be happy to furnish your group with a maps of our trail system! See below for information on guided Nature Hikes.
- Mountain Boarding:
Imagine a skateboard with big, knobby tires on it… careening down a grassy hill. You're imagining a mountain board! Go off-road on one of our all-terrain or high-performance boards. If you're skilled enough, you might even learn to jump! Mountain boarding is available for children 7th grade and up. Instruction, boards, and safety equipment are provided. Mountain boarding is $22.00 per one and a half hour block. There's a ten person minimum to mountain board.
- Nature Hikes and Classes:
Spend time hiking with the Highroad Naturalist or one of our other awesome, engaging and informative staff! Learning about crazy critters and snacking on edible plants! Learn how to build fires "Native American style," how to catch critters in the streams, how to track animals on land, how to survive if lost in the woods, or how not to get lost in the first place! Choose from among our seven classes: Animal Traces, Native American, Night Hike, Stream Studies, Survival Skills, Totally Trees, and Compass/Scavenger Hunt. For details on our classes and hikes, check out the School Groups page. All classes meet Virginia SOLS, and can be modified to help fulfill merit badge requirements. If you have a specific topic that you would like to focus on, or theme that you would like to have conveyed, contact the Naturalist at naturalist@camphighroad.org. We're happy to develop a nature program that meets your needs.
New Improved Weekend Programs! - Weekend Nature Classes and Hikes are $7.00 per child for an hour and a half of programming, rather than for a one hour block. Same price, more program! There is a ten person minimum for Nature Classes and Hikes.
New Lower Weekday Prices! – Because we know that many schools and other groups that come during the week are taking on budget shortages and bus schedules, we have significantly reduced the prices of our Weekday Nature Classes and Hikes. Weekday Nature Programs are now $6.00 per child for an hour and a half program ($4.50 per hour), $10.00 per child for two, hour and a half programs ($3.33 per hour), and $12.50 per child for two, two hour programs ($3.12 per hour). There is a ten person minimum for Nature Classes and Hikes.
- Pool:
Cool off in the Highroad pool… Splashing is encouraged! Please note, the pool is open from late spring through early fall and must be reserved in advance so that we can schedule a lifeguard and clean the pool! The price for the pool is $100.00 per hour for up to 30 people. Thereafter, it costs $5.00 per additional person.
- Rock Wall:
Learn the basics of climbing and challenge yourself on our rock wall! The rock wall is available for campers 7th grade and up, and costs $15.00 per person per hour and a half block. Two instructors and safety equipment are provided. all you have to bring is your courage! There is a ten person minimum for the rock wall.
- Zip Wire:
Looking for a challenge? Take one of the three approaches out to our 40' high zip platform. If you don't find your challenge there, you'll find it on your way down the 400' zip line! The zip wire is available for children (and adults…) 5th grade and up. The zip, when separate from a challenge course package, costs $15.00 per person per hour and a half block. There is a ten person minimum to for the zip wire.
