Girl Scout Badge Work Course

9 years & older

16 Participants Maximum

Group Course Only

$30 per scout

Group of 5 or more required

Understand horse behavior:
- Learn how horses communicate through body language and how to stay safe around them
Learn horse care and grooming:
- Understand how horses eat
- What they are fed
- How to use grooming tools
Identify gear and tack:
- Learn the parts of a saddle, bridle, halter (Western and English styles)
Master grooming and tacking:
- Safely groom a horse and assist with or learn how to tack up
- Assist with learning how to tack up
Practice riding skills:
- Learn correct mounting, dismounting, steering, stopping, and basic gaits under instructors

Partner equestrian facilities structure their hands-on Scout programs to directly check off these steps:

Stable tours and barn talks:
- Staff members lead guided tours of the barn feed room, and pastures to teach daily care routines, equine anatomy, and stable management
Interactive grooming sessions:
- Scouts get hands-on time with the horses to practice safe handling, leading with rope, and using proper grooming tools
Tack demonstrations:
- Instructor lay out western/English saddles and bridles, explaining the function of each piece of equipment
Supervised riding time:
- Programs conclude with a mounted arena lesson or guided ride where Scouts practice correct posture (balanced seat), starting, stopping
Safety Compliance:
- Facilities provide safety helmets, verify proper dress codes (long pants and closed -toe boots, 1 inch heel) and collect required liability waivers
